Sample Chopping 101: Even Slices, Transients, Pitch and Where to Get Material
Sample chopping is a core sampling technique in which you cut an existing phrase into small pieces, rearrange them and build a new loop. It's used widely — not only in hip-hop but also in lo-fi, house and trap lead-making.

Let's be clear about where we stand first. Hip-hop sampling has always meant digging for records and flipping something you found yourself. We are not going to tell you that a loop subscription is the "correct" way in. Start from records — or the CDs on your shelf, or something you recorded yourself — and cut. The only thing that actually needs handling is the rights, and only when you release. Section 2 lays out the material routes and how each one gets you to a release. 1. A quick history of chopping — what emerged as a technique
The practice of cutting up samples is said to have developed greatly in hip-hop from the late 1980s into the '90s. Samplers of the time had extremely little memory (for example, the E-mu SP-1200's sampling time totaled about 10 seconds), so they couldn't take in long phrases as-is; producers honed the method of cutting out short fragments, assigning them to pads, and finger-drumming to reconstruct them. This constraint, as the widely told account goes, ultimately produced the chopping aesthetic of "reincarnating source material into a different song while keeping a trace of the original." In the 2000s, the soulful style of speeding samples up to play them at higher pitch also became common.
This culture sat next to the issue of sample clearance from the start. As summarized in our clearance article, since the 1991 U.S. ruling it became "industry common sense to clear samples before release." The part people mix up: digging and cutting did not become forbidden. What is forbidden is putting it out and earning from it without clearing. The order still works fine — dig, cut, build, and when something is good, work out how to release it.
2. Where the material comes from — four routes
There are broadly four places to get sounds to chop. The list runs from closest to the original practice down to easiest and lowest-risk. None of them is nobler than the others — you pick based on what you're trying to do.
- 1. Dig records and CDs and sample them yourself: this is the actual body of hip-hop sampling. Used record stores, flea markets, your parents' shelf, the dollar bin nobody touches. Most of what makes the technique interesting lives in finding a sound nobody else is using. You can cut and build from this as much as you like as practice — the constraint only appears when you release and distribute or sell. When something turns out good, look at clearance or swapping in a Tracklib source.
- 2. Play and record it yourself, or get sounds from people around you: track a Rhodes or a guitar in one take, dirty it up so it feels like tape or vinyl, then chop it. You own the rights from the start, so nothing blocks the release. When you want a live-sounding lead, this is often the fastest road too.
- 3. Rights-cleared real songs (Tracklib): dig and download released songs already contracted with labels, with licensing completed inside the service. It's about the only route that replaces the experience of digging real songs with a legal equivalent, and it's the realistic landing spot for someone who has been doing route 1 and now wants to sell.
- 4. Royalty-free loop material (Splice, Loopmasters): usable commercially within the terms with no extra fee. Honestly though, this is borrowing a loop someone else already finished — a different act from finding something yourself. It's a fine practice surface for the technique, and it's practical if you're producing type beats at volume, but presenting it as the entry point to sampling gets the order wrong (see also understanding royalty-free correctly).

3. Technique #1: even slicing — start here
The most basic chop. You mechanically divide the sample into equal parts by beat (8 or 16 slices are standard), assign each fragment to a pad or key, and re-drum them in whatever order you like.
- Match the material's BPM to your DAW's project tempo (or match the project to the material).
- Load it into a sampler (TR-series, Simpler/Sampler, FL's Slicex, etc. — names differ by DAW) and slice at 1/8 or 1/16.
- Play it once in the original order to grasp the whole.
- Swap the order, or machine-gun and loop the same fragment, to build a 2–4-bar loop.
The appeal of even slicing is the accidental rhythm created by fragments chopped off mid-phrase. A fragment that starts somewhere other than the head of a chord is itself the seed of a new groove. Getting a feel for it by playing under constraints like "make a loop using only fragments 2 and 6" works well.
4. Technique #2: transient-detection slicing — make the phrase shine
The opposite of even slicing: detecting attacks (transients) and slicing at musical divisions. Many DAWs and samplers have a function that auto-detects a waveform's attacks and places slice markers.
The advantage of this method is that chord changes and the heads of single notes are cut out cleanly, so each fragment becomes a "usable sound." Arrange the extracted chord fragments in a different order and you can build a loop with a different chord progression from the source.
Three practical tips:
- Adjust detection sensitivity: for slices that are too fine, lower the auto-detection sensitivity to consolidate them.
- Fine-tune the cue point: manually fixing the marker so it lands just before the attack improves the response when you play it.
- Remove click noise with fades: putting a few-ms fade at the head and tail of a fragment prevents the "pop" from fragments cut off mid-waveform.
5. Technique #3: changing pitch — repitch and time-stretch
Alongside chopping, pitch manipulation is a core of sampling. There are two methods, and the character of the sound changes greatly.

One cause of the thickness of the hardware-sampler era is said to be the change in texture from repitching (and low sample rates) (see the secret of the '90s boom-bap sound). Even in modern DAWs, choosing a "stretch off, match by playback speed" mode reproduces the same behavior. Practical rules of thumb are as follows.
- Enjoy repitching of around ±2–3 semitones together with the change in texture. Move it more than that and the unnaturalness tends to stand out.
- When the material's key doesn't fit the song, first check the material's key with the BPM/key detection tool, calculate the semitone difference from your target key, then move it.
- Raising pitch also raises tempo (when repitching), so deciding pitch before you chop and then slicing means less rework.
6. Finishing — put drums on it to make a beat

Q. Is digging records and sampling them something you're not allowed to do any more?
A. No. Digging, cutting and rebuilding is the body of hip-hop sampling. The constraint applies to putting it out — distributing or selling without rights handling can infringe. The realistic order is: dig and make something first, then, once it's good, either get clearance or swap in a comparable source from a service that includes rights handling, like Tracklib. Q. If I chop finely so the original is unrecognizable, can I use a commercial song?
A. Regardless of the degree of processing, sampling a commercial song without rights clearance can infringe rights. There is no "as long as no one notices" standard, and audio-matching technology keeps advancing. For beats you sell or distribute, either clear it or swap in rights-cleared material.
Q. So should I just start with Splice?
A. Depends on the goal. If you only want to drill the slicing and repitch moves, royalty-free material like Splice is easy and suits that. But it's borrowing a loop someone else finished, which is a different act from digging up a sound only you have. If what you want is sampling itself, start from records you own or things you record yourself, and look at clearance or Tracklib when release time comes.
Q. How many slices is the "correct" number for a chop?
A. The right answer changes with the material and your goal. If you want to rearrange rhythm, starting from 8 to 16 even slices is easy to handle, and if you want to keep chords or phrases intact, slicing at transient positions is better suited. First get a feel with even slicing, then use them selectively once you're comfortable.
Q. How do I choose between repitch and time-stretch?
A. Repitch changes the whole playback speed, so pitch and tempo change together, and the change in texture makes it sound sampled. Time-stretch lets you change tempo (or pitch) independently, but overdoing it produces artifacts. For texture, repitch; when you want to match key and BPM precisely, stretch.
