Courtrooms and new releases collided this week. Lil Durk's federal trial opens Thursday, August 20 in Los Angeles, while the 2Pac murder trial in Las Vegas reached opening statements. Friday brought two big drops on the same day — Trippie Redd's "NDA" and Nipsey Hussle's posthumous "PROLIFIC" — and Pooh Shiesty debuted at No. 7 with almost no promotion while still behind bars. Lil Durk's federal trial opens August 20, with a fight over the witness list
Lil Durk's federal trial is set to open Thursday, August 20 in Los Angeles, and the pre-trial maneuvering sharpened this week. Following a hearing on Thursday, August 13, prosecutors asked Judge Michael Fitzgerald to keep their witness list under seal, citing witness safety — they have alleged that witnesses and their relatives were threatened during the case. Reports put the government's list at roughly 35 witnesses, about 20 of them considered central.
The charges stem from a 2022 ambush near a Los Angeles shopping mall that prosecutors say was meant for the rapper Quando Rondo but instead killed his cousin, Saviay'a Robinson. Durk has pleaded not guilty and faces a possible life sentence. Prosecutors are also expected to use his lyrics as evidence, which puts another rap-lyrics-in-court fight on the calendar barely two years after the YSL (Young Slime Life) saga ended.

2Pac murder trial reaches opening statements

The trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, which opened last week, has moved past jury selection into opening statements. It's the first murder prosecution ever brought in 2Pac's 1996 Las Vegas killing, and the proceedings are being livestreamed as each side lays out its case. Prosecutors don't claim Davis fired the shots; they describe him as the man who organized and gave the order for the attack.
The case hinges largely on Davis' own past words. In his 2019 memoir and in interviews, he placed himself in the front passenger seat of the white Cadillac and described handing a gun to the men in the back. Under Nevada law, someone who knowingly joins a murder plot can be convicted even if another person pulled the trigger, and Davis faces life without parole if convicted. As we noted last issue, Suge Knight — who was seated next to 2Pac — is refusing to testify, and whether he takes the stand remains unclear.

Trippie Redd delivers "NDA," his first album in three years

Trippie Redd released "NDA," his sixth studio album, on August 14 through 10K Projects and 1400 Entertainment. It's his first since "Mansion Musik" peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in 2023, and at 25 tracks it's a sprawl — the tracklist was rolled out the day before through Spotify's RapCaviar.
The guest list is enormous. Alongside already-released singles with Sexyy Red, Young Thug and Kodak Black sit features from Lil Wayne, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Rema, Ski Mask The Slump God, BigXThaPlug, Rob49, NoCap and YNW Melly. The campaign pitched a return to the melodic emo-rap of his 2016 SoundCloud run, and on that front it delivers — whether 25 tracks was the right container is the argument that will define its first month.

Nipsey Hussle's posthumous "PROLIFIC" arrives, a joint album with Bino Rideaux

"PROLIFIC," the long-promised joint album between Nipsey Hussle, who died in 2019, and Bino Rideaux, arrived August 14 — one day before what would have been Nipsey's 41st birthday. The 15-track project came out through All Money In and Out The Blue Records, with distribution through Atlantic. The crucial detail: it isn't a posthumous patchwork. The record was largely built in 2017 and finished along the lines Nipsey had already laid out.
Features include Cardi B and Ty Dolla $ign on "I Just Wanna Know," plus Leon Thomas, Buddy, James Fauntleroy and the late Static Major, who appears on the earlier single "Reckless." Nipsey's brother Blacc Sam has said Nipsey championed Cardi early and once considered her for "Victory Lap." Seven years on, it's the rare posthumous release that feels authored rather than assembled.
Pooh Shiesty debuts at No. 7 from a jail cell

The album we flagged last issue, Pooh Shiesty's "All Eyes On Shiest," debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with roughly 51,000 equivalent album units (sales plus streaming converted into album-equivalents) — comfortably ahead of the industry projection of No. 9 with about 40,000. The 16-track project arrived August 7 with GloRilla, Sexyy Red and Tay Keith attached, and had already topped the all-genre US Apple Music chart before the Billboard number landed.
What makes the number remarkable is the absence of a campaign. Shiesty did no interviews and no release-week shows because he remains incarcerated while awaiting trial on robbery and kidnapping charges. A top-10 debut carried almost entirely by an existing fanbase is a real data point about how much promotional machinery a street-rap release actually needs in 2026.

Rolex gives Drake a one-of-one custom Daytona

On August 15, Drake unveiled a one-of-a-kind "Ice Gradient" Daytona built and gifted directly by Rolex to mark his 2026 chart milestones. The dial is pavé diamond, and the bracelet is the point: it shifts from clear stones into progressively deeper ice-blue, with "Freeze the World" engraved on the caseback as a nod to his Iceman era. He called it "the most important thing I have ever had the pleasure of owning."
Rolex almost never does this publicly, which is arguably the bigger story than the watch itself. Elsewhere in Drake's week, his Stake lawsuit in New Mexico slid into limbo after a separate arbitration ruling.

Diddy countersues his accuser, Lil Rod

Sean "Diddy" Combs has filed counterclaims in Manhattan federal court against producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, whose $30 million sexual assault suit has been active since 2024. The August 11 filing accuses Jones of defamation over statements made in the 50 Cent-produced Netflix series "Sean Combs: The Reckoning," and of taking footage that ended up in the doc.
Combs alleges Jones accessed a videographer's workstation and later handed the material to Netflix, framing the whole suit as a "campaign for revenge" driven by wanting more than his agreed fee. Jones has not withdrawn any of his own claims. Combs is serving a 50-month sentence following his 2025 conviction, so this fight continues entirely on paper.

NLE Choppa takes aim at Pooh Shiesty and NBA YoungBoy

Memphis got loud again. NLE Choppa dropped a freestyle on Los Angeles radio station Power 106, then confirmed on his Instagram Story that Pooh Shiesty was the target — a response to a leaked call in which Shiesty allegedly called Choppa "gay." He also folded in NBA YoungBoy, his long-running rival, accusing both of copying his aesthetic, from Shiesty's chain to YoungBoy's camo look.
The YoungBoy half is familiar. The Shiesty thread is messier: the mother of Choppa's child, Marissa Da'Nae, is reportedly expecting a child with Shiesty. Neither Shiesty nor YoungBoy has responded, and given where they are — one incarcerated, the other living in South Korea — a proper back-and-forth may not materialize.

R&B heavyweights Usher and Chris Brown added new dates to their joint tour — a strong R&B pairing, and a sign of how much demand there is. Amid a rap-heavy week, it's the one story from the vocal side of the aisle. Specific venues and dates are in each artist's official announcements.

Open Mike Eagle and Kenny Segal release "DOOMED!"

A little lost in Friday's bigger releases: rapper Open Mike Eagle and producer Kenny Segal put out "DOOMED!: Rap Songs About a Relationship That Ends in Every Possible Universe" on August 14 via Backwoodz, billy woods' label. Woods himself and Gothic Tropic turn up.
It's the kind of record that won't touch a chart and will still end up on plenty of year-end lists. Segal producing a full Mike Eagle project is a pairing underground rap has wanted for a while, and the multiverse-breakup conceit gives Mike room to build jokes and devastation into the same bar.

On the calendar: Rapsody and Cam'ron land August 21

August doesn't let up. Rapsody's "God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops" arrives August 21 as a 16-track set, following the "Apple Juice" video from late July. The same day brings "Cam'ron Presents: Frederica," named for Cam'ron's late mother and arriving with a companion film — his first proper project in years, and by every indication his most personal.
August 28 then closes the month with Rod Wave, E-40 and Czarface. Plenty to dig into as summer winds down.
